FANFIC FAVOURITES

The FANFICTION section will be undergoing a major overhaul this October.

Please be advised that almost all links here lead to stories with R content, with violent and explicit sexual themes.

In the Spotlight

Just wanted to share. I have a secret House, M.D. OTP that I want to keep a secret. It's frustrating that I can't post links to my fave OTP's fanfics, but I think this is better than putting it up here, biting my lip, and thinking to myself, "Oh no, abernaith, you have crossed the line." If I did that, House would loose his House-ness, methinks. So, no. I won't do it.

FANFIC RECOMMENDATIONS

BtVS & Angel : Discworld : Good Omens : Harry Potter :

Lord of the Rings : Once Upon A Time in Mexico : Miscellaneous

Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel the Series

Very very long (94 chapters, still not finished), but awfully good. Awful lots of sex too. But, most surprisingly, sex is NOT distracting to plot. Which makes this a real superb treat. (If you're in for the looong ride.)

This is just perfect. Spike and Xander, in slow measures. Of a normal relationship, as normal as it gets in their world (post-NFA, AtS).

I almost broke into tears when it ended, when I realized that the spell was already over. But there's that lingering feel of magic still, and it's making me sniffle. Gosh, but I just love this. Never was much of a Buffy fan, more obsessed with Angel really, but even I could tell that Spike/Xander chemistry is a solid, real thing...too good to pass up on the exploitation, wehehe.

Harry Potter

Abernaith is a seriously hooked Remus Lupin/Severus Snape shipper. She hardly looks at any other ship. Although, there are some exceptions to the rule. However, she can vouch for the known fact that the Lupin/Snape ship is one of the most consistent in churning out high-quality fanfiction. Choicest picks here include: stuff found in Switchknife's Slash Recommendations, The Treacle Tart's fanfiction and others I sniff out via Google.

This is actually HET. (As in, heterosexual relationships only.) You might be thinking, YE GADS! What's gotten into her??? but I assure you that this is one of the best Lupin stories ever, so never you mind that it's het. So if you haven't yet, GO READ IT NOW, PLEASE.

This is classic Harry/Draco.

Purely intellectual, and very sensual writing. It is like a kaleidoscope, every facet closely examined, and no stone left unturned. And yet for all the pretty patterns revealed, all the more that the characters are steeped in delicious mystery. I barely got out of reading this alive, the first time. It's such a heady experience, that up to now I can't get it out of my head. But no matter how hard I try to grasp the fullness of this story, it escapes me like smoke.

  • MY ONE TRUE SHIP

    Remus Lupin/ Severus Snape fanfiction

  • SINOPE

It wouldn't do justice to both Sinope and Guede Mazaka to say that the former is to the HP Snupin fandom as the latter is to OUATIM El/Sands. It's just not that simple. But the fact is, this is pretty much how I experienced both authors. I would even go so far as to say that, in a way, both Sinope and Guede Mazaka have been very influential to my own writing, and my own hardcore devotion to the world of fanfiction.

But, undoubtedly, it is Sinope's exceptional Thirteen Ways that figuratively turned my world upside-down and finally opened my eyes to the power of poetry, particularly Wallace Stevens' poetry. I owe a lot of what I am now to that first genuine breach of literature into my life.

So, without further ado, here are some of Sinope's works, all of which could make any Snupin fan proud of their ship:

  • MORE GREAT WORKS

This is just so sweet. The narration is kept simple, Lupin is kept mysterious and a flummoxed Snape is always good. Especially if the flummoxing is done by a certain craft werewolf, with a penchant for love poems. A nice little story to read while curled up in your couch with a hot cup of...tea. :)

This taught me to love Jewish culture, particularly Jewish romances. It's got one of the best-researched period setting and historical background I've ever read in any story, and the narration and tone is dead awesome. I wouldn't mind reading this as a stand-alone, or a legitimate novel. I felt that its ties to HP are superficial at best.

The author sets a slow pace, as if to view the world in soft, sepia tones. Rarely do I get to read stories concluded with grace and finesse, where all the delicate pieces of the plot fall into place at a single, simple sentence--a finely-wrought story.

It is far too seldom that I encounter such charged, intelligent dialogue as exchanged in these stories, especially in Five Full Moons. It is a wonder that the author can push for such a conclusion, and indeed, that the plot survived its ambitions. There is no place for soft sentimentality in these stories, nor does the narrative tarry at illusions that the reader might be quick to suggest. I doubt the author is blind to the temptation, but all the more are these stories, conjoined at the hip really as to be considered complementary halves, made worthy and moving and true.

This is like an ultra-diluted version of Four Christmas Eves...but not. It's wonderfully well-written crack, imo. Being a Snupin shipper, I thought that having Snape think of Tonks and follow it with "Clearly, she needs to die" as his mantra is a stroke of brilliance.

Chapter 1 / Chapter 2 / Chapter 3 / Chapter 4

A "What If" story, written with great sensitivity and care. What with all the great OUATIM fanfics out there (for a small community, it's a goldmine), it would seem easy enough to understand Agent Sands' twisted psyche after a few stories (with a couple of NC-17s digested slowly for good measure). But this particular fic actually reminded me that it honestly is never easy to dig into the hell-hole that is Sands' brain. So, truth be told, I wonder how the authors of all this great stuff manage to do the impossible. Is it really so much easier to write about insane people than sane ones? How come toying with dysfunctional subjects seems more appealing? I'd really like to know...

On another, entirely different topic: I was surprised to find the author and I share in a few traits. The world is so small... I'm proud to have this one here.

Try this story: Integral

(Guest starring Vincent(Tom Cruise) from the movie Collateral(2004))

It's one of the rare times I appreciate my knowledge of higher maths..

Warning: It's a TOTALLY intellectual nuke.

Miscellaneous

X-Men: the Movie/ Van Helsing crossover

One Piece

Neon Genesis Evangelion

This is the Apocalypse. Angels and demons are real. And it's all up to DJ Croft to stop it. NGE Alternate Universe, crossover with X-Files.

Smallville

I'm not a Smallville fan. Never had the time to finish even a single episode. But I've got enough of the comic geek in me to understand Superman, plus a pretty good grounding on the Marvel heroes and the Justice League folks. So I figured, just toss in the usual soap-opera melodrama, fine tune the angst multiplied by the superpower factor, and voila!--it's just that easy to understand Smallville.

Even though I hardly knew Smallville, I couldn't resist this masterpiece. Would never have thought of resisting anyway. Who would've thought that a crossover between Spiderman and Smallville, set a decade after the movies and the series respectively, would've made a convert out of little old me? Why, perhaps its the uber-slashfest between Peter and Lex. Or maybe the chocful of angst, I could gorge on it. Or even just the fantastic writing, with so many images; shiny and sharp and painful, muted and cold and numb, brittle as seashells echoing despair. God, I love when superheroes brood. And have sex. The brooding just make them all the more sexy.

American Gods

This is like a dream come true for me. I've always wondered about that almost-interlude chapter, right smack in the middle of Neil Gaiman's American Gods, that bears almost no relationship whatsoever with the rest of the book. Add the fact that it has gay sex and has a feel for Unresolved Sexual Tension, and it just about had me squeeing like a good little fangirl over it. This fic...this fic is truly a dream come true.

Brokeback Mountain

I've been following this fic religiously since the beginning of February. And so I needs must confess my utter shame for not putting it up here, for posterity. It's certainly earned its right to be in My Most Memorable Fics Evah collection...
Gosh, but this is BBM fanfiction at its finest. I won't be surprised if this turns out as one of the Top Classic Must-Read Fanfics Ever. And if you haven't watched Brokeback Mountain yet, I implore you to __watch it__. And if you haven't got a friggin clue what that movie is about, well, here's the short story it's based on by Annie Proulx: read it!

Fairytales

I cried reading this. I laughed, and giggled, and rooted for Brendan. This is the best version of Beauty and the Beast I've ever read. Sometimes it reads like something out of Sense and Sensibility, other times like something that Nora Roberts might cook up. But that's also what makes this drama so charming--because the guy/guy thing just makes it unconventional, therefore unusual, and therefore unique and not just some ordinary, trashy romance novel.

Howl's Moving Castle

A very sensitive piece, taking into account the otherworldly qualities of the canon world and embracing the consequence of change and growth in the understanding of love through flawless prose. The imagery is fantastic and heart-breaking. This story is the strangest, most beautiful 'coming-of-age' piece I have so far encountered in the world of fanfiction.

Temeraire

Spoilers for Black Powder War, the third installment in Naomi Novik's Temeraire series.

  • Xiang by makesmewannadie

This is a nice look behind enemy lines, where even a celestial dragon and scholar of icy temperament such as Lien can have her moments of impatience. I felt that her working relationship with Napoleon is still a bit stilted here, and it does not quite justify the easy affection between the two in Black Powder War. But I suppose there was little enough that Ms. Novik wrote about how they got along, apart from that scene on the hill that was at best only a vague impression, and this does nicely to fill in that long gap leading to the end of Empire of Ivory.

This has a chilling ring of authenticity to it that I could easily see it as the alternative to what Laurence might have encountered upon his return. Not an Admiral, but a defeated ex-captain. And that bit about the proposal echoed eerily what Laurence actually did in canon, although in very different circumstances, that my mind started going, "Oh, no, what if...?"

Oh, but who am I to speculate, eh? I don't know many Lois McMaster Bujold fans, but I am sure there are many out there who happen to be Temeraire fans as well. ;-)

Pirates of the Carribean

Persian Boy

At its heart, it resonates with canon. I loved the tenderness between teacher and pupil, and how easily the fire was coaxed so that the relationship blazed from easy friends to passionate lovers. The author handled it all so gently and so masterfully, and she brought things to a conclusion that at a single stroke fills the heart and wounds it. I think this a great complement to the book.

Heroes (NBC)

Even someone not into mylar or even Heroes could see the very obvious chemistry between Sylar and Mohinder. Every time they're within ten feet of each other, sparks fly. It's interesting that the Heroes writers paid close attention to developing these two the way they did.

According to a fellow shipper and fanfic writer, "it's a messed up pairing". But, the fact remains that canon reeks of it, so much so that I bet no one would be surprised if they take it to the next level. I'm so happy that the actors who play these characters, Zachary Quinto and Sendhil Ramamurthy, have acknowledged this chemistry and the potential 'sylinder' pairing.

  • The Love Song of Gabriel 'Sylar' Gray by hackthis
  • Laugh? I Nearly Died by hackthis
  • Complicatons by Isagel
  • Blinders by Isagel - from the 5YG-verse, an interesting take following on the curious friendship of future fake-Nathan and Mohinder. Quite elementary, really, when the average fandom slasher puts two and two together.
  • Recessional by cerebel - A right guilt-trip for our favorite Indian geneticist, this one.
  • Save Me by cerebel - A good one to start off with after a 24-hour binge on Season 1.
  • Gravity : Part 1/2/3/4 /5/6 by cerebel
  • Sad and Sunshine Days by cerebel
  • Road Not Taken by ilsaluvsrick "His destiny was Mohinder and he’ll never have that now."
  • Eternity by cerebel - Short and sweet. The tangent on reincarnation is interesting, but I would dearly love to have it applied in a longer fic, taking into account the many complex abilities that could reinforce/manipulate/disprove/improve upon this belief. The "afterlife" must be a very interesting concept for Sylar, especially since he knows about Claire and Peter.
  • What Miracle Is Wrought by cerebel - An apocalypse not instigated by Heroes superhumans casts a fresh light on some of the characters. I particularly liked the subtlety in this; the tension in the dialogue that speaks of hunger and despair and the shadow that looms over all their heads.
  • Alternate Universe by violet anchovy AU Mylar is the best, because Gabriel Gray could have been one of the coolest superheroes ever, along with Peter and Hiro. Granted, his gift is perfect super-villain material. Anyhow, I'd much prefer he drive Mohinder crazy in a good way, rather than what's happening in canon.
  • Whom Gods Destroy by Mercaque - Oh, no! Sweet mother of god--what, oh, what have you done to Hiro?
  • Vivid by levitatethis
  • What He Should Have Done by Squills
  • Sunlight on Ripened Grain by Shona - I just love those two fuddy-duddies, and they're still heartbreakers even way past their prime.
  • The Geography of Grief by sinemoras09
  • Six Conversations About One Thing by levitatethis - I thought this contained a fresh insight into Mohinder's mind. It's refreshing to perceive him as not totally clueless, but hopelessly in denial.
  • Unwise by ladywilde - Mohinder whores himself out in the hope of covering up his deepest, darkest fantasy...I like the concept and how it unfolded in this story. The writing, especially the surprise twists, was nothing less than awesome.
  • The Life One Does Not Lead by squills - This author never disappoints when it comes to mylar/sylinder fics. This particular fic reminds me of another work by the same author, "What He Should Have Done". There are a lot of 'ifs' and 'should-haves' in both stories, but "The Life One Does Not Lead" is sort-of like an updated version of the earlier fic, presenting canonical events in Season 2 and neatly linking them to Season 1 mylar moments without embellishment, through an (admittedly too easy) plot device.
  • Step Sideways by molly_commas - The language is beautiful, the rhythm and pace of the story slow and gentle to allow the reader to take in the richness of the settings. There is no haste in this story which makes it surreal, considering the characters involved. Nevertheless, this fic is like an enjoyable, pleasant dream.
  • Creep by soda_and_capes - Violent and terribly beautiful. Very much an NC-17 fic, so click at your discretion.
  • Make You Love Me by verbalvixen - This is a prime example of why Sylinder is not a healthy ship. I love how Sylar's twisted need for attention is emphasized here. That being said, it still felt a bit wrong to crank up Mohinder's cruel apathy to bring Sylar's 'twisted human frailty' out. Are Mohinder and Sylar stark opposites that meeting halfway in any level is impossible? (I guess that's the brilliant thing about this fic--it made that particular thesis work, without sacrificing even an ounce of the chemistry, hoho!)
  • Process by etoile_dunord - I love fanfics like this. When the world you know is 'naturally unnatural', the mundane becomes charming.
